There's a hell of a lot written about Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Its always presented as complicated and the domain of experts.
We have done some work on SEO as we frankly didn't have the time to work on SEO optimization ourselves.
SEO is about getting search engine ranking - how many times have you seen the words "Dominate Google Ranking" or "Reduce Your Costs and Increase your Profits"! Its BIG business for the SEO companies. They all talk about link building, keywords or phrases, traffic and content, and website design. All good stuff but there must be a simpler way.
So we decided to identify the KEY things you should avoid to see if we could save ourselves the cost of hiring an SEO company. Here's what we found!
1. Avoid Adobe Flash on your web pages. Flash is normally used in gaming sites for animation, video and interactivity. It has its place BUT - heavy flash based websites can have trouble gaining page ranking with search engines, including Google. Basically, it seems the search engine spiders cannot navigate through flash and they can't tell what the flash content is.
2. Avoid using lots of graphics and images. They have the same effect that using a lot of flash will have and can affect your page ranking.
3. Avoid using flash, images or graphics in a website's navigation as the search engine spiders won't be able to navigate through the pages. A solution if you simply must, is to use a Sitemap. Use Google Sitemap Generator or one of the many sitemap generators available.
4. Keep your URL's short and relevant. In fact always have your Keyword included or imbedded in the URL.
5. Keep your web page content to the point and avoid those inane, long winded epistles of irrelevant or useless content on a webpage just for the sake of filling up space on the page. Keeping the reader interested is the key and will increase your search engine quality score.
6. Make sure your website's files are organized and easy to navigate, and always place folders with important information near the top of the file directory.
7. AND - never, never, never stuff keywords in your meta tags, image alt tags, etc or stuff your page footer with lightly-colored or hidden text. That is spam. Make sure you select your target keyword and any closely-related keywords and include only these in your page title, description meta tag, and in your page content.
If you apply the above you will help your ranking and you will save some money. Your comments to these points will be appreciated.
